LCM Systems have manufactured 28 load pins for use in a theatrical stage lift application. The requirement was for 4 x 6te, 16 x 11.5te and 8 x 15.5te load pins, each with 4-20mA output, which will be installed in stage lifts at the Hale Centre Theatre in Utah to monitor the loads on the chains that drive the lifts. This will allow real-time monitoring to ensure loads are equally distributed and within operational limits.
Packed and ready for collection on Monday is a 400te telemetry load shackle, which has been ordered by a major oil & gas contractor. The traceability requirements were extensive, with non-destructive testing and proof load testing of the load shackle body and pin carried out at GN Rope premises and witnessed by ABS, as well as material traceability to 3.2 (EN10204). The calibration was also witnessed at our factory on the Isle of Wight. The load shackle was supplied with a specially designed bobbin which increased the diameter of the load pin to ensure it fit perfectly within the weighing assembly. From order receipt to despatch was just 6 weeks, which included all the testing.
Leaving for Norway today are four 380te load pins, which will be installed in a shark jaw chain stopper arrangement on an Anchor Handling Tug. They will be used to measure the loads on the anchor chain to ensure it remains within safe limits. Environmentally sealed to IP67, with integral 4-20mA amplifiers and 12m of armored cable, these stainless steel load pins have been designed to be robust enough for long-term operation in an offshore environment.
Heading off to Singapore this week are two 150te load pins which will be installed on the deck of a marine vessel in a pulley sheave. These load pins will be used to measure the tension in the mooring line to ensure loads remain within safe operational limits. Manufactured from 17-4PH stainless steel and environmentally sealed to IP67 for suitability in the marine environment, the load pins also have an integral 4-20mA amplifier for signal output directly to a PC.
Leaving the factory today are two small compression load cells, rated to 5 tonnes. These are for a Norwegian customer for use as part of overload controls on personnel lifts on offshore oil & gas platforms. Because of the operational environment, the load cells have to be suitable for use in harsh operating conditions and ATEX/IECEx approved – in this case Ex d for Zone 1 hazardous areas. The load cells are supplied complete with load cap, 10m of cable and Zone 1 approved enclosures to house a 4-20mA amplifier.
We have just despatched 6 sets of load pins with handheld displays, all neatly packed in a transit case. These kits will be used in a specially designed assembly for supporting the engine of A400M military transport aircraft while a gearbox change is carried out. Two load pins are attached to vertical turnbuckles and register the engine weight, which can then be balanced between the two pins to ensure even weight distribution on the support assembly. The other two load pins are attached to lateral turnbuckles, which, whilst registering some of the engine weight, are also used via the turnbuckles to apply a pre-load to support the engine when the gearbox is removed.
A submersible 250te load pin left our factory this week which will be used for mooring line tension monitoring on an FPSO. The load pin is fitted with a specially design cage to protect the load pin connector and is supplied with an anti-rotation bracket.

To help get everyone into the Christmas Spirit, Newport load measurement equipment manufacturer, LCM Systems Ltd, decided to hold a Christmas Raffle for its employees. To make it a bit more of a special event, it was decided that those participating would make donations to local charity ‘Isle of Wight Food Bank’. This vital local service provides emergency food to those most in need, who through redundancy, illness or an unexpected large bill find themselves without the necessary funds to provide food for themselves and their families. Items in the raffle were kindly donated by LCM Systems suppliers, as well from by the company. Managing Director, Steve Sargeant also promised to match the total amount raised.
The company’s 18 employees donated an impressive £124.50, which meant that with the matched donation, a cheque for £249 has been sent to Isle of Wight Food Bank. Steve Sargeant commented “It is important that we take time to consider those less fortunate than ourselves over the Christmas holidays. As a company, we wanted to do something to help contribute in some way, and felt a raffle would be a fun way of doing so. I am really proud of the amount our generous employees raised for this worthy cause, and it was a great pleasure to be able to send a cheque for nearly two hundred and fifty pounds to our chosen charity”.
